About the Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin

The 15 tiny-homes and community center is located on nearly 2 acres. Each home is 128 square feet and furnished with a bed, seating, refrigerator, a TV and microwave. They provide meaningful structure and individualized programming for Veteran residents. They offer comprehensive resources, Alcoholics Anonymous, Alcohol and other Drug Abuse programs, financial literacy, peer support and more.

They also provide Veterans and their families with a Veteran Market. It is stocked with fresh produce, meat, organic goods, plant-based options, and more. The Veteran Market supplies Veteran and Surviving Spouse households with food, cleaning products, hygiene products, pet supplies, and other household items. The Veterans' Outreach of Wisconsin proudly now serves over 400 households per month.

The Mission

Assist homeless and at risk Veterans strive for normalcy in life by providing food, clothing, shelter, and other basic needs.

History

In 2013, after identifying gaps in services for formerly homeless Veterans, Jeff Gustin , Matthew Vachalik, and a small group of like-minded individuals created Veterans’ Outreach of Wisconsin, recruited volunteers, and began soliciting donations.

As a result of this effort, newly housed Veterans were able to use donations of furniture and household goods to furnish their homes. With an outpouring of support in the first three months, VOW outgrew a garage and barn and had to move into a large warehouse to keep up with donations and demand. As this process continued, more questions were asked and answered about the needs of veterans.

In spring of 2015, Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin added a food and clothing pantry. The pantry had over 3,000 visits, distributing over 110,000 pounds of food and the home furnishings program supplied furniture and household goods to more than 200 veteran homes by the end of 2016.

During the same period, the idea to provide a homeless recovery program for homeless or at-risk Veterans was born. During a visit to VOW in February, Mayor John Dickert of Racine, WI, gave his full support.

His enthusiasm, dedication and ability to think outside the box helped make the village and community center a reality. After finding and buying the property, getting the approval of the city, and enlisting an army of volunteers and donors, the project was born and has come to fruition.
